All power is generated off grid with solar panels capable of generating 11-kilowatt hours and the lithium phosphate batteries able to store up to 8-kilowatt hours. The Scenic Rim is a chain of extinct volcanic mountains and landforms that burst into existence around 24 million years ago. 30 Gorge Road is an extinct volcanic crater within this mountain range. The soils and rocks exhibit evidence of volcanic ash falls, volcanic gas bubbles, “sticky” lava flows and the presence of an ancient volcanic crater lake. The floor of the crater-lake is a rich red, well-drained soil and now supports four small forests of clumping bamboo. The large southern deck at the house looks across the top of the bamboo forests and up at a sheer wall of rock rising some 440 metres above the crater floor.
